My opinion? Internships as they exist today should cease to exist. Entry level jobs are called entry level jobs for a reason. Either they’re the beginning of entrance to the field, or they don’t exist.
This is all to manage an expectation about just entering the working field. If you are a new participant, the expectation they want you to have is that you have zero bargaining power whatsoever. You should, in fact, be grateful to beg for the scraps that you starve under.
It’s all by design to disenfranchise the laborer as much as possible.
